-Lettre du 8 mai 1695 (de Paris) : sur une inscription latine « Premièrement, il n’y a pas lieu de s’étonner que l’on donne ici à Mercure, le titre d’Auguste, puisque les médailles nous représentent un Apollo Augustus, dans Antonin Pie et dans Sévère, et un Hercules Commodianus dans Commode » ; « Enfin, touchant la ressemblance à quelque empereur romain, que ce Mercure peut avoir, c’est à vous qui êtes sur les lieux, à en juger, puisque vous êtes si expérimenté dans la physionomie des empereurs, par la connaissance que vous avez de leurs médailles, et des bustes ou statues antiques que vous en avez vues » (lettre autrefois dans la collection de Troussures vendue en 1912 ; Abdel Halim, p. 189-190 et 196-197, n° LXXIII).
