Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".
-Lettre du 15 août 1730 (de Spalding, Lincolnshire) : He begins with a carefully contrived argument, showing that antiquarian knowledge, especially of coins and medals, aids interpretation of literary descriptions in the classics and therefore that classical scholars and antiquarians are allied and the former must necessarily value and respect the latter. He hopes P. will enrol as member of the Society for the improvement of learning; which is amassing a library, and holds meetings and is well supported by local gentry subscribers. He refers to the examples of Plato’s symposia and the modersn, to Locke’s preface to his essays, and to Sir H. Wotton. He himself has contributed observations on some of the oldest Lincolnshire towns and on a few medals. He quotes an epigram by the Bean of Peterborough in which Stukeley’s illuminating antiquarian contributions are extolled. (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Eng. letters d. 46, f° 199-201).
