-Lettre du 4 mars 1780 (de Den Haag) : « Pour le petit cours de numismatique, j’y penserai tout de bon et je verrai s’il n’y a pas un meilleur moien pour avoir une certaine quantité de medailles que celui que vous me proposez. Hier j’ai fait l’emplêtte par le plus heureux hazard du monde d’un grand medaillon d’or, dont il n’y a que deux dans l’Univers entier. Mais helas il n’est que Romain! Je viens d’ecrire à Van Dam à Amsterdam; je le lui propose en troc, ou contre trois medaillons grecques que je possedois autrefois, ou contre un certain bouclier qui depuis vingt ans s’est niché dans ma tête.
