Lettre du 16 janvier 1770 (de Francfort) : se lamente sur la disparition de Caylus et de Winckelmann qui « marchait à grands pas sur les traces de feu notre adorable comte ; il avait cependant trop d’enthousiasme pour l’antique, si c’est un défaut, et trop de préjugés contre les étrangers, ce qui en est certainement un fort grand » ; sur les « Il y a encore quelques amateurs de médailles dans ces contrées. L’Allemagne n’a cependant plus de Spanheim ; la Suisse n’a plus de Morell ; il n’y a plus d’Ursinus en Italie ; la France seule a conservé de vrais antiquaires » (Paris, BnF, Fonds français, n. acq. 1074, f° 233-234 ; Sarmant 1994, p. 662, note 66 et 2003, p. 169, note 70, p. 214, note 102).
