-Lettre du 1 septembre 1708 (de Deventer) : « Le système du P. Hardouin est entièrement renversé, et ce jésuite, tout savant qu’il est, n’y saurait répondre » ; « Il y a longtemps que je n’ai eu aucune nouvelle de Mr. l’ambassadeur de Spanheim, quoique je lui aie écrit diverses lettres ; j’ai reçu sa dernière en 1706, quand j’étais devant Ath ; depuis ce temps-là il s’est rangé sous les étendards d’Harpocrate. Je le crois fort occupé aux affaires de son sérénissime maître, ou qu’il tâche d’achever le second volume de ses belles et savantes Dissertations ; je crois aussi qu’il commence à penser à la retraite, ayant passé l’âge de quatre-vingt ans. Dieu veuille que la seconde conjecture soit vraie, et j’aurai raison de me consoler de ne point recevoir de réponse de sa part » (Cuper 1743, III, p. 198-199 ; Sarmant 2003, p. 134, note 131).
