-Lettre du 1 août 1709 (d’Oxen) : « On m’a envoyé depuis peu quelques médailles, dont il y en a cinq ou six d’assez singulières. Vous avez vu, Monsieur, par ma dernière lettre, que l’Orient m’occupait alors presque tout entier ; je ne m’en puis encore défaire, et c’est pour cela que je vous envoie copie d’une médaille de bronze, où il y a quatre caractères qui me semblent être arabes. Je n’y vois goutte, talpa caecior sum, et quoiqu’un des bâtons croisés soit fait en gouvernail ou en massue, je ne détermine pourtant rien, et je laisse aux illustres académiciens l’explication de cette énigme » (Cuper 1743, XII, p. 227).
