-Lettre du 1er septembre 1709 (d’Oxen) : à propos d’Hardouin : « Les personnes d’un tel savoir sont oridnairement idolâtres de leurs opinions. Je croirais la chose faisable (de le faire changer d’opinion) si c’étaient des paradoxes détachés, mais ils sont bâtis sur un système, sur un grand fondement, et le nombre en est si grand qu’il est presque impossible que la vérité ou même la vraisemblance y puisse prendre place et les chasser du cerveau d’une personne qui en a été remplie depuis si longtemps » (Cuper 1743, p. 231 ; Sarmant 2003, p. 133, note 120).
