-Lettre du 15 nov. 1706 (de La Haye) : « Les raretés qui m’étaient envoyées de Smyrne se sont perdues avec le bâtiment qu’on peut dire avec raison in ipso porta naufragium fecisse, ou au moins, igne in eo periisse. J’en suis presqu’inconsolable, et certainement Mr. Heyman, ministre à Smyrne, et moi, y perdons une fort belle collection, et des antiquités dont on n’a pas encore vu d’exemples, comme certainement est le sceau d’un corps d’athlètes établis du temps de l’empereur Gordien troisième, j’en ai pourtant le dessin, et je le publierai dans quelques temps avec une dissertation sur les Sceaux des anciens rois, et des empereurs romains, où il entre, sans me flatter, des observations assez curieuses « (Cuper 1743, IV, p. 471).
