Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".
'In one of his surviving notebooks, Gough discussed a number of unusual coins, principally by reference to the Pembroke catalogue, but also making much use of Haym’s Tesoro. He used Haym as a source of material, in a straightforward fashion, although on one occasion he did allow a note of hesitation to creep into his commentary (ff. 20-1: "I suppose there is no reason to distrust Sig. Haym’s Accuracy as to either of the Medals, either Monsr Masson’s or ye Duke’s. Goltzius has it in the same manner but his reading is also clearly confirm’d by pur Coin in the Pembrochian Collection. Haym conjectures that ye Name of ye Place might be written both ways SΑΞΟS or ΟΑΞΟS. or that Saxos being near Oaxos, the Two Citties made use of the same Artist. This last Opinion is surely very improbable, but the former is endorsed (?) by Mr Chishull, and He, you observe, is followed by Mr Maittaire."). There is no suggestion, however, that he thought that the book was of little value.' (Burnett 2020b, p. 969)
