Lettre du 12 mars 1702 (d’Edinburgh): '... I’me very glade of the Opportunity ye expect in May of Mr Curriers comeing fro Leeds to Edinburgh and shall send by him ... Duplicats of Ancient Scotch Coyns I have, if ye so desire. ... When ye are at London, I doubt not but ye will visit my worthy and honoured patron Mr Charleton of the Middle Temple who has the neatest Collection of Curiosities in Britain, and more particularly of Medals and Shels.' (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Radcliffe Trust c. 1, f° 73; Burnett 2020b, p. 1546).
Abstract from EMLO: Is making careful provision for safe carriage of box of curious seeds to R. Will send by a friend the «violet smelling stone» and fossils and old coins gathered near Edinburgh. Is glad to hear of the doings of R.’s learned friends, and wants to know of Dr. Sherard’ s progress with the new edition of his Pinax. Asks R. to enquire of Sherard and Lloyd whether they have received «the violet smelling stones» he sent them. Will send Dr. Thoresby the requested autograph. Requests R. when in London to visit «my friend and patron Mr. Charleton of the Middle Temple who has the neatest collection of curiosities in Britain» especially of medals and shells. «He can show you the violet smelling stone I sent him».
