Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".
'I have your Letter by Post of Aug: 28th, and towards the end of October I received the Box of Medals which ye hade delivered to Mr John Campbell to be sent to me. They came very safe in good condition and were most acceptable. [complains in extenso about the 15% cost of transferring money between London and Scotland, and suggests an exchange of ‘Gold not curent, or silver Bullion’]. The Medals I most desire are such silver Consular ones as I want, which my List you have will inform you off, as also what Imperiall Series ye may get for completing my Series; as for the high priced pieces of those Emperours I already have with ordinair Reverses, I care not to delay them a while till I get my Set of Heads somewhat full.'

RemarksRemarks regarding the annotation. (en)
'The letter is catalogued as being from Sutherland to Hans Sloane, and Cowan follows the attribution. But there is no addressee, and it is hard to imagine Sutherland writing in this way to Sloane, since in July 1702, after Courten’s death, he wrote to Sloane to introduce himself. It ‘fits’ much better with his correspondence with Courten, although we do not seem to have any letter of 28th August, to which Sutherland refers at the beginning of the letter.'
