Lettre du 23 août 1786 (de Paris) : encourage Eckhel à publier en le félicitant de sa Sylloge nummorum veterum» Le grand ouvrage que vous avez entrepris sera d’un secours infini, non seulement pour la connaissance des médailles, mais encore pour la chronologie, la géographie et toutes les branches de l’histoire ancienne. Vous seul pouvez exécuter un projet si utile ; rien ne le prouve mieux que l’essai que vous venez d’en donner […] Je n’ai pas besoin de vous dire, Monsieur, que si vous désiriez quelques éclaircissements tirés du Cabinet du roi, je me ferais un vrai plaisir de vous les procurer » (Wien, KHM, MK Archiv V ; Sarmant 1994, p. 157, note 78 et 2003, p. 182, note 18).
