-Lettre du 27 mai 1691 (de Black Notley, Essex): Remarks on various fossils, which he seems to argue are limited to shells and bones of fishes. He remarks that ancient Roman coins and medals are found in the Chester neighbourhood and that here and in other places there are Roman pavements to be seen. The books written on Stonehenge confuse more than they clarify. Re would agree with Inigo Jones that it was a Roman work were it not too rude and unpolished for their architects. You are the first to acquaint me with the figures of plants impressed on slate. (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Eng. hist. c. 11 fol. 48).
