Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

-Letre du 20 novembre 1774 (de Lapal House, West Midlands): N. must take care of his cold which if succeeded by a cough throws many a young fellow into a consumption. He cannot compete with Mr. Barker for the medallion at 2 guineas; but he has had from London a special halfpenny and farthing of Charles II (he describes these). He is told that Mr. West’s coins fetched £2,200 and that Snelling, now deceased, bought £700 worth: and «that London is the worst market in the world for coins - so many collectors and so many who have more money than taste that a real virtuoso stands no chance, if he has a small fortune». He tells him of certain coins to look out for. He is impatient to think that there are so many coins in Birmingham one cannot get at. Any Greek, Roman or English coins in good preservation which N. can have for their value in weight will be acceptable. For N’s information he appends the prices that a few of Mr. West’s coins fetched at the sale. (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Eng. misc. d. 146, f° 39).
