Lettre du 20 jan. 1734 (d’Avignon) : « J’ai trouvé la médaille d’or dont je vous envoyai le dessin rapportée dans un livre assez rare en France qui a pour titre, Della descrizione di Malta con le sue antichita ed altre notizie fra Francesco Abela, in-fol., Malte, 1647, pag. 204 : Fralle altre medaglie de’ Carataginesi trovate qui in Malta, un’altra pure d’oro si conserva appo noi, nella quale si ravvisada una banda una testa di bella donnacon bel acconcio e affettato capo e dall’altra un cavallo. La testa di donna giudicchiamo significhi quella di Didone, che fuggendo l’ira e schivando lo sdegno del fratello Pygmalione, venne a fabricare Cartagine in Africa, la quale doppola sua infelicissimamorte, fu adorata per dea, e a cui i Cartaginesi stolti sacrificavano sovente cittime umane. Il cavallo è simbolo deimedesimi. Una simile Elettra era maggiore n’abbiamo anco veduta, ritrovata nel Zeytun, d’eccelente e esquisito lavoro. Je ne saurais pourtant me ranger au sentiment du Maltais. La fabrique de la médaille me paraît guère dans le goût punique ; surtout la tête qui est bien dessinée et d’un grand relief» (Bouhier VI, p. 46, n° 20).
