18 April 1558 (from Bruges): “Nummos illos tuos optime amicissimo Pighi quos nuper isthinc mecum abstuli, transfusurus illos in plumbum, prius ad te fueram missunt nisi contigisset me tardius Brugas reverti quam cogitarem, idque quod Mechliniae tum et Antwerpiae et Gandavi inter reditum me oportuerit aliquantulum diutius opinione haerere. Cum itaque domum reversus intellexissem, Smetium nostrum statim a feriis hisce pascalibus ad te profectionem insitutere nulli visus sum mihi totius eos committere potuisse, maxime cum tabellarius noster, qui statis temporibus ultro citroque hinc Bruxellas commeat, non esset tum ad manus, ut eos potuerim prius remittere. Quare si opinione aut expectatione tua tardius redierunt ignosces mihi. Numerus eorum erat xxi, qui autem illi fuerunt videbis in elencho illo a me descripto, quem tibi reliqui, scilicet illi quibus asteriscus in margine appositus est. Quo autem nitidius transfundi possent, repurgavi illos a sordibus, quae inhaerebant, deinde ita caute et religiose, ut laeserim eorum, quae solent antiquitati & numis gratiam aliquam et elegantiam conciliare; qualis est aerugo illa viridis in superficie, quam antiquarii vermicem appellant, quemadmodum potes videre; sed solum sustuli superflua, quae subtilitates et litteras pene obscuraverant. Velim autem per Smetium nostrum ad me mittas reliquum illud nummorum tuorum, quos desiderabam ad transfundenda exemplaria, illos potissimum, quos in hac schedula hisce litteris inclusa descripsi; quos quamprimum ad te remisero, et maturius, uti spero, quam istos. Mitto simul a te nummos aliquot consulares, quos a reditu meo acquisivi. Si qui sint qui proposito tuo videbuntur servire, iis utaris quam diu videbitur. Si iis qui hactenus apud te fuerunt, non amplius uteris, poteris non incommode per Smetium nostrum remittere.
