Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

'I am trulie sorrie for the misfortune [the September 1691 theft from the Ashmolean Museum]; things of Instrinsic value are to kiept in strong-boxes, or in Cabinetts, placed in inward roomes or Closetts: I carried this day your letter to Mr Charleton: and we both agree that Mr. Ashmole is not to be acquainted with it by noe meanes, being verie weake, & crazie in mind as well as bodie, & therefore this might make too dangerous an impression upon him against you. however if it chance to come his eare I will doe my best to appease him.
I have bought a 12 of Indian Coynes to send you, to helpe to smoothe the Visitours which you will receive by the Carrier. The stones you sent last I thanke you for, there was but one of them but I had before which was \of/ the oister kind. I divide the buccina into 15 Sections, of which I have now printed off 12, and I hope to finish the whole within an other yeare.' (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Ashmole 1816, f.87 (transcription from EMLO); Burnett 2020b, p. 455 n. 600)
