-12 fév. 1686 (Rome) : « Il paraît depuis deux ou trois jours un bando, c’est-à-dire une ordonnance du Pape, affichée par tout Rome, qui défend à qui que ce soit de vendre sans sa permission, d’acheter, de transporter, d’emballer, d’encaisser, ou disposer d’autres vaisseaux pour y mettre des statues, peintures, marbres anciens, médailles, joyaux, etc. Ce bando est fait directement contre la France. Tout Rome murmurait hautement et accusait Nostro Signore de lâcheté, de ce qu’il laissait faire les Français » ; « Le Sieur Vaillant n’a pas tintammaré ; mais son habileté lui a fait trouver moyen d’escroquer grand nombre de très rares médailles, dont il n’avait pas encore connaissance, ou du moins qu’il n’avait pas vues en France » (Manuscrit privé – Valéry 1846 vol. 1, lettre LXXX, p. 219-220).
