-Lettre du 13 août 1685 (de Rome) : « On dit ici que l'affaire de Mantoue se réduira à rien. On parle des médailles trouvées dans le creux du nouveau canal d'Eure, et on craint fort qu'elles n'y aient été mises peu de jours avant que de creuser dedita opera, pour se moquer de nos français. Mais cela serait bon si nous n'avions pas d'habiles gens en ce genre d'étude, qui feront la loi aux étrangers quand il leur plaira, aussi bien sur cet article que sur les autres » (Valéry 1846 vol. 1, lettre XLIX, p. 105-110).
