'Numos antiquos Anglo-Saxonum & Regum vestrorum sigilla accepi lubens, eoque nomine & tibi & nobilissimo D. Cottono grates habes gratissimas: opus sane accuratum & vobis dignum. ... Aveo videre Historiam Anglicam, cum illis nummis & sigillis tam eleganter & curiose delineatis: sed vereor ne Anglice scripta nullo usui mihi esse possit: vestram enim linguam penitus ignoro.' ['I have received with pleasure the ancient coins of the Anglo-Saxons and the seals of your Kings, and on that account I am extremely grateful to you and the most noble Mr Cotton: it is a really accurate work, one worthy of you ...
