Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".
'I am almost asham’d to tell you of an unfortunate piece of negligence I have been guilty of. I carried my best [med]dals wth me to Rome in an ordinary mony bag without any [c]are in ye packing them so yt ye jolting of ye chaise has so rubd [t]hem one against another yt many of them are quite spoild & ye rest have losy ye enerable rust of Antiquity & appear t[o] be arrant brass. However, such as they are, I show’d some of them to fficaroni who has given me a much better opinion of them than I had before; for I find yt Greek Coins are more rare & more esteem’d among ye Virtuosi of Italy than ye Imperial ones: & whe[n[ I look’d over ye Grand Duke’s Collection, it as some comfort to me to see yt ye addition of some wch I have woud have made it more perfect.'
