Lettre du 2 mars 1686 (de Rome): "Se vi è scienza in cui sia profittevole, anzi necessaria per ben possederla la contenzione, questa è senza dubbio la professione dell'antichità, onde benissimo osservò Vostra Signoria Illustrissima nell'ultima sua del 25 caduto che la contenzione è quella che acuisce l'ingegno et apre la mente a penetrar nell'oscuro delle cose, e se vi è città in Europa dove si esercitino contenzioni in materia d'antichità, questa è Roma, sì per la quantità de' dilettanti che in essa risiedono, sì perché dotti e ignoranti, pizzicando l'antiquaria, tutti voglion discorrere, mossi da qualche po' di pratica che nel maneggiare e vedere nel continuo medaglie si hanno acquistato" (Firenze, Archivio di Stato, MP, 3952; Fileti Mazza 1996, p. 364-365).
