['A new work on ecclesiastical antiquities has been published by you...; it caused me both happiness and sorrow. Happiness, because so great a benefit had been granted by God to His Church; sorrow, because those few little things, in which I alone might perhaps have been able to assist you, I omitted to send you, being unaware that there was a need to hurry. For I have been working on a true history of Great Britain for a full thirteen years, to be proved for the most part from the archives themselves. ...
