I have perused Gronovius’ notes on the monument (temple?) at Ancyra and am astonished that he finds occasion for violent attacks on Norisius’ malignance; and he wonders too that in his commemoration (reminiscences?) of Cossonus, Gronovius omitted mention of men who wield high national responsibilities (he names several). He does not include himself among those slighted knowing as he does Gronovius’ habit of mind. The result is that Cossonus is deprived of the laudations which glorified his life. He has heard from Otho Sperlingius inter alia that he is going to bring out a treatise on unsealed coins and to show that the Jews up to the time of Christ did not use shekels but weights, and that they and eastern peoples did not use stamped coins before the Greeks; hence so often in the scriptures the mention of Greek drachmas.
