He apologised for his silence and informed van Damme about his activities in the meantime: he had re-arranged the imperial collection of ancient coins and published its catalogue, also, he had been handed curatorial responsibility for the imperial collection of ancient gems and cameos. Most importantly, Eckhel mentioned that he was in the process of preparing a new comprehensive handbook on ancient coinage (“la Science des Médailles”): it is the work published from 1792 onward under the title Doctrina numorum veterum. Eckhel trusted that van Damme might be able to help, for example by providing information on unknown specimens.
