Your Packet for Consul Pilkington proceeded y^e next day after it came to my Hands & I presume you may by this time have receiv’d an Answer. I am extreamly oblig’d for yo^r Trouble in giving me an Acco^t of y^e most Useful Books p’taining to y^e Science of Medals, & I do begin now to be convinc’t y^t y^e Business requires so much Pains & such an accurate knowledge of y^e Roman Affairs, y^t I shall prove very unequal to it. I have now run thro’ Monsr Vaillant’s Medals Lat’ & Greek & having exercised a little, I begin to Master y^e Types: y^e latter of those Books does, in my slender Judgm^t of this Matter, seem to be an excellent Instructor to young Beginners, & indeed sufficient for that Part of y^e Science: But then I observe, y^e Author has not given any Judgm^t of y^e p’ticular Coyns as he proceeds, w^ch he has done in y^e Lat’ ones; so y^t how shall I be informed what are rare & what are obvious? w^ch all y^e Practise in y^e World will not teach. I remember to have seen in some Directory, fro’ yo^r Hand, for buying Medals, y^t all Imper: ones wth Gr. Inscr’. are valuable, but yet I presume there are numerous exceptions to y^t Rule, w^ch could not easily be laid down to those who have no Practise in this Business. The Town is at present so crowded wth Mob y^t I have not been able to go over to Stamboul, to make any Discoverys. As for y^e small silver w^th Lat. Inscr.’ I have never made any acco^t of ’em, because yo^r Directions seem to slight ’em, unless they bear somew^t remarkable on y^e Rev. as a Temple, Arch, Horseman, &c. but upon second Thoughts I conceive y^t all y^e Emp^rs & Emp^sses who coyn’d but little Money are worth buying. As for Medals of y^e Colonies they do rarely offer, except Troas & Antioch w^ch are of y^e Lowest Value, but for all others I suppose they are y^e most rare. By this time I hope Bro^r Owens cargo is arriv’d. He advises me of a Catalogue to be transmitted to me after you have selected what are for yo^r Purpose, & also about y^e like number out y^e Catalogue, not legible to Him, & y^t he has reposd(?) in y^t y^e Power of setting y^e Price (y^e whole number amounting to about 400) but does not mention of what Mettal. I presu[me] that Part of y^e Countrey is more fruitful of Good Medals than any other of this Empire. He desires y^e Acco^t of ’em mu[st] be speedily made. The seal enclosd came fro’ Rhodes, it seems to me not ancient, but I am at a loss what to mak[e] of it.
