Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".

'Sr, tho’ neither my Genius nor study is given your way, yet believe me, It will be a real Advantage & satisfaction to me in any wise serving your most ingenious & publick Designs, in wch I wish you all possible Success & Honour, & am ready & resolvd to Obey, with thankfullness & pleasure the first Command you Condescend to Oblige me wth. As to medals I’m greatly Ignorant, & in Truth, of most things; but a passionate Lover & Admirer of These yt are not: the Utmost of my Abilitys I devote to yr Service, & you may safely depend on a sincere will & fidelity in what I promise. So soon as yr kind Leter came into my hands, I enquired after & found in the hands of a Xtian of this Country a very costly parcel, valued at three hundred Dollars, for wch a Frenchman bid 200 & 50 for their Academy &c. There is the worth of about fifty doll’ in Gold & Silver; but having no Commission from yr worthy self, nor any other Correspondent to venture so far I held the Owner in Suspense till a more favourable Opportunity.' (Royal Society, MS 254/393; Burnett 2020b, p. 617)
