Since my last to you under Ap. 12, I am obligd by yors of ye 9th, ye Contents relating to ye Medals are [v]ery satisfactory & worthy of my Esteem; & you cannot [b]lame me for pressing upon you for Information, because [I] find conversing wth you, by far, ye more compendious way of [le]ading my advances. I have receivd ye Books fro’ Brother Owen, but they are 2 or 3 small imperfect Pieces of Monsr Patin, such as Histoire des Medailles, & an Anonymous Author of ye same Subject, wch are but Trifling Things for this Purpose. I am concernd that Consul Pilkingtons Packet wch ought to have been heard of before ye date of yor Letter, I saw it put under Mr Stamper’s Cover & forwarded wth his Letters. You were pleasd to lay your Comands upon me to gather up my duplicates, wch I should otherwise have been ashamd to have sent you. I could have enlargd ye number, but as you plainly see yt bad is ye best, so ye less of it ye better. I cannot yet send you any accot of my farther acquisitions having not yet been at Stamboul. All silver I p’chase now at 8 per’ per drachma of ye Shraphe yt I deal with. I shortly expect a small Supply fro’ Angora. Cairo sends no auxiliarys worth mentioning, I have just receivd a small Cargo; ye French spoil ye Trade there by vending false Medals & giving great Prices for True Ones. I hope you’l excuse me if I am a little Troublesome in future since I find ye advantage of yor Conversation here will be of short Continuance, so yt I must lay in ye Foundation upon wch I can improve afterwards.
The Greek Convent at Maure Molos is at last raz’d to ye Ground, upon ye Monks petitioning ye vizier to lett em rebuild ye Xch, offering also ye Xch Plate to ye Treasury. I shall be ambitious of executing yor Comands in this Place, if you can make me serviceable to you during yor stay in this Countrey & I am most heartily
Sr yor very faithful & humble Sert
W Crosse'
