There seems to be only a single surviving copy of the lost 1666 edition, today in the British Library BL (C133 g 3). The copy has no title page and goes only to p. 280, where, at bottom of the final page, someone (Marsham?) has written ‘Exemplaria quingenta, huc usq[ue] impressa, incendio Londinensi perierunt, 4th die Sept. a0 1666’ [500 copies, printed this far, perished in the fire of London, 4th September 1666]. Each emperor is introduced with historical notes, carefully annotated with references at the bottom of the page, and followed by his wives and any relevant ‘socii reges’. A number of coin engravings have been stuck in at the relevant points. The commentaries generally do not mention coins, although Urbs Roma and Constantinopolis are listed correctly after Constantine, but provide details of events in the emperor’s life and his titles, appearance and character. Most are derived from Tacitus, Suetonius and Dio, and correspondingly later sources for the later periods, e.g. the ''Historia Augusta''. There are many corrections and additions in Bell’s hand, including amendments to the coin engravings (Trajan, Pescennius and Geta), and the narrative seems to have been unfinished, reaching only as far as Valentinian III (thus for the original 400, rather than the revised 600, years?).
Bell subsequently began [[Bell, Beaupré - Catalogue of the collection of Beaupré Bell|another new version]], with a title page, now dated 1741, but it has only the first seven pages, from Pompey to Augustus, and they can have been written only shortly before Bell’s death in August of that year.' (Burnett 2020b, p. 1656)
|Grand document='Since ye sealing of this, I received a letter from one Welborne, who is Steward to ye Earl of Peterburrough; wherein he offers to sale (either to the University or any private person) a Collection of silver and brasse \coyns/, consisting of 13 hundred pieces; but at so dear a rate, (viz. 6s. one with another) that I know ’tis to no purpose to mention it to ye V. Chr [Vice Chancellor], nor in[deed] would the University buy them at any rate. I suppose ’tis ye Collectio[n] of his Master, tho’ he only tels me, they belong to an ancient Gentleman, who is willing to part with them because his Sight begins to grow dimme; an[d] addes there’s a cabinet to be sold with them, so curious that it was design’d to have been presented to K. James as a repository for his Medals. I have heard Beverlandt commend Peterburrough’s coyns as ye best collection in England. This I have added because I know not but Sr Roger may be disposed to purchase such a collection. I suppose for a small gratuity we might have a man of judgement & fidelity to view them; and doubt not but they will abate much of the price he proposes, though he says 30ll. a piece have been offd for so[me]. A Letter may be directed to Mr. Robt Welborne, near The E. of Peterb’s House, by the Horse Ferry in Westminster.'
As Courten does not give any source, they may well represent his own views. The notes cover topics such as how to recognise the ancient from the modern, how to recognise a fake patina, how forgeries would be made in bronze, how to tell an ancient die from a modern one, or how to assess the corrosion products.' (Burnett 2020b, pp. 777-8)
The gold column is a list of names from Julius Caesar to Postumus; as well as rare emperors, it includes many empresses and members of the imperial family. Often the names are followed by letters which look like ‘v.g.’, whose significance is not clear, and occasionally with the word ‘none’ (in cipher), strangely twice after M. Antonius and after Agrippina II; again its significance is unclear. The silver column similarly runs from ‘Julius Caesar’ to ‘Corn. Supera’ (the wife of Aemilian, but mistakenly described here as ‘uxor Valeriani Iunioris’). The letters ‘v.g.’ again appear, less frequently, and sometimes we also have ‘comon [in cipher]’, which seems to contradict the ‘rare’ of the heading in a confusing manner.' (Burnett 2020b, p. 767)
|Grand document='Stukeley's more general work on ancient British coins, the MSS of which amount to some 200 folios. The work was left in several drafts and unfinished, several chapters existing only by their titles. It covered familiar ground, starting from Abraham and stressing the religious significance of the coins for Britain’s early history. The main interest here is that Stukeley had, however, completed several descriptions for coins for the plates (ff.30–9, 150–1, 161–92). The descriptions are, predictably, often fanciful.' (Burnett 2020b, p. 922)
On p. 14, there is some addition of the totals from previous pages, followed at the end by some summaries (f.99v–100r = pp. 14–15):

: <s>589:10:0</s> Totall value of my Roman Great Brass Coins contained in 11 Draws of my best Cabinet 22th July 1709<br>
The pages were originally numbered 1 to 79 (plus two more unnumbered, at the end), and the numbers in the left-hand margin do, indeed, refer to the variety listed for each family in Vaillant. The numbers after each family name refer to the numbers of varieties for that family listed by Vaillant. There is also a number at the end of most entries, starting with 1 and running to 144 (e.g., Vibia 5); it must represent an original listing to which a number of others have been added.'
The sale of [Lady Carteret's] coins has been attributed to Sloane [by Archibald 1994], and, although there seems nothing else in the volume that concerns Sloane’s collection rather than that of Sambrooke, the sale must surely be one by Lady Carteret to John Kemp (1665-1717), which we know about from other sources. However, we still need to decide what to make of the presence of the papers in this volume, otherwise devoted to Sambrooke and among Sloane’s papers. Might it have been the case that the coins, or some of them, passed from Kemp to Sambrooke; or from Kemp to Sloane; or from Kemp to Sambrooke and then to Sloane?' (Burnett 2020b, p. 783)
