Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".
'Sambrooke’s Republican coins were listed by him in BL Sloane MS 3407, ff.116–52:
- 1706 Catalogue of my Coins of the Roman families extracted out of the 2 volumes of Vaillant
- The figures in the margins refer to the same in those 2 books. And the figures added to the names of the families show the number of Coins of each family, of whom Vaillant gives a Desertation.
- Note that were this Peck or Mark I·I is made at the beginning of any Paragraphs, & before the head of any Coins in the two books, the same I have.
The pages were originally numbered 1 to 79 (plus two more unnumbered, at the end), and the numbers in the left-hand margin do, indeed, refer to the variety listed for each family in Vaillant. The numbers after each family name refer to the numbers of varieties for that family listed by Vaillant. There is also a number at the end of most entries, starting with 1 and running to 144 (e.g., Vibia 5); it must represent an original listing to which a number of others have been added.'
