-Letter of 19 Febr. 1796 (from Halle): “Il nostro Ab. Eckhel insino ad ora ci ha dato fuori sei volumi della Doctrina Numorum Veterum. Aspetto in breve il Settimo. In generale l’opera è una delle magistrali, ma non manca del suo debole. Io l’ho attaccato per questa parte. Il mio originale è pronto [= Descriptio], e un libraio di Lipsia ha preso l’impegno di stamparla. […] Il Console Cousinéry di Smirne mi scrive, che il di Lui medagliere sorpassa le 8000. medaglie greche molte delle quali inedite; è di grande soccorso. Se così è, il Sistema d’Eckhel si ritroverà tutto rifuso, mentre egli non ha lavorato se non sopra tutto ciò che ritrovasi nel Museo Cesareo, e sopra quello stato pubblicato da altri, avendo mancato di esaminare molti Musei Italiani. Ma ha lasciato il campo ad altri, ma bisognerà un altro secolo, per potere appianare, e sciogliere molte difficoltà, che si ritrovano nella Numismatica, non ostante [le n]uove scuoperte, e soccorsi avuti in questi ultimi [tempi]” (Padova, Biblioteca civica, C.A. 1435.1; Missere Fontana 2022, p. 550, note 292)
