Grand documentOriginal passage from the "Grand document".
-Lettre de 1697 ou avant (d’Alep): In playfully deprecatory and academically allusive language which rather disguises the point of the letter he tells B. of his quest for ancient coins and medals, of which he has not succeeded in tapping the great stores to be found in the East. England, he says, is confessedly barren «but it can bring in antiquities as a merchant do the wealth of the world». Greece and Asia Minor are rich in inscriptions on marble, but there are too many to send. He refers him to the chaplain at Smyrna. At the cost of travail and hazard of Arab highwaymen he has been able to place and date the ‘Gloria Petri’ inscription: and he interpreted it to the natives at their request. He hopes to have more to contribute about books. B. is the only person he has written to. He has written by way of the bay of Marseilles. He sends his service to the president of St. John’s, and the Vice-Chancellor. (Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Smith 45, f° 165-166).
