'My deare freind 'It is now a good while since I receaued your excellent present to our University Library, and had, ere this, told you soe, and return'd our many and harty thankes, had I not been suddenly and unexpectedly call'd away to Worcester, whence I am now return'd for ye Visitation of Bodlye's Library (when the Vice-Chancellor and all the Curators were mett) I presented your Booke, to ye Vice-Chan: and the rest, in your name, as a Testimony of your kindnes and loue to learninge and our University, as also of your ability to inrich Bodlye's Library with your owne works: any man who has a minde to it, and money, may giue us good bookes of other mens makeinge, but very few of their owne: pauci quos æequus amauit Jupiter—some more generous and ingenuous soules, a Seiden, a Dugdale or an Ashmole may doe this, none else. The Vice-Chancellor and the Curators were exceedinge well satisfy'd with, and very thankefull for your great charity and munificence to ye publique. Care is taken, that your name and gift be recorded in our Register to your deserved honor, and the incouragement of others (by your good example) if not to an equall, yet to a like liberality. and sure I am, it will be an honor to you and a comfort to your freinds, when they shall find in our Register, that you haue beene so great a Benefactor to Bodlye's Library. My loue and respects to your selfe, and my honest freind Mr Dugdale. God Almighty blesse you both, and (Sir) Your affectionate freind Thomas Barlow. Q. College Oxon Dec. 18. 1668.'
