Lettre du 23 décembre 1682 (de Padoue) : Averoldi asked him to buy denarii of the emperor Claudius: Patin did not have any to sell, but sent him a coin of Clodius Albinus «pro medio doblone, imo pro nihilo» (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [39] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
Lettre du 20 janvier 1685 (de Padoue) : an ironic reference to Andreas Morell’s book Specimen universae rei nummariae antiquae (Parisiis 1683) about the originality of the text. On 20th January 1685 Patin wrote to Averoldi: «Andreas Morellus is well known to me. He is Swiss, a good man, a friend of mine and his fidelity is not to be doubted. I have his Specimen. I did not give my name to the booklet, though it can be definitely given, if we have to be honest» (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [55] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
Lettre du 13 septembre 1685 (de Padoue) : Patin congratulated Averoldi on buying two denarii of Ulpia Marciana and Cornelia Supera, «nummos optimos et rarissimos» (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [60] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
Lettre du 24 février 1686 (de Padoue) : The selling of Jacob Spon’s book Ignotorum atque obscurorum quorundam deorum arae (Lugduni 1676) happened after the news of the author’s death, of which a disconsolate Patin gave notice to Averoldi: «I will prepare an epitaph if and when time wipes the tears away [...] He had been the most dear among dear friends» (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [66] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
Lettre du 13 mars 1686 (de Padoue) : Patin said he had bought a lot of «nigri» - silver - coins for 80.00 lira, found in an antique case covered with leather in which there were many denarii, including the «rarissimi» Didius Iulianus and Pertinax, but also some counterfeit coins of Pescennius and Antinoo; à propos de Spon «He was always a true and devoted friend» (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [67-68] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
Lettre du 18 avril 1686 (de Padoue) : In the spring of 1686, Patin tried to purchase three silver coins from Brambilla with the help of Averoldi, who had to pretend to buy them for himself: a denarius of Augustus with L. VINICIVS in exergue on the reverse (fig. 7), a drachm of Julia Domna with Mount Argaeus on the reverse (fig. 8) and another denarius with the heads of Caracalla and Severus or Geta (figg. 9-10). Patin wanted to pay two zecchini or eight ducati of lira for them, 6:16 each (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [70] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
Lettre du 2 mai 1686 (de Padoue) : «We know the great ignorance of Brambilla, who is always afraid of being deceived, and whatever I ask him about increases in value» (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [71] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
Lettre du 22 juin 1686 (de Padoue) : Brambilla in fact could not sell many coins to Camillo Silvestri of Rovigo who had discovered that the silver ones were just a lure to attract potential customers for other coins of lower value. «Brambillam novimus ignarum, stolidum, ne pejus dicam»: this was the final Patin comment about him (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [72-73] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
Lettre du 17 décembre 1686 (de Padoue) : he wrote to him that a denarius of Didia Clara with the inscription HILARITAS TEMPORVM (fig. 5) was worth no more than fifteen ducats; Charles Patin judged coins which Averoldi thought of buying as counterfeit, for example a bronze Ottonian coin (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [76] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +

Lettre du 2 octobre 1690 (de Padoue) : A fake of Scipio Africanus nummus with Carthage submitted: The problem of counterfeit coins was considered very important by Patin who was trying to convince a friend of his to prepare a book of images of these false coins so that collectors would be able to recognize them easily (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [97] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +

And then he proceeded: «At Graeci hodierni poene sunt barbari et saepe scelesti» (But the modern Greeks are almost barbarians and often rascals) (Padova, Museo Bottacin, MB 855, c. [115] ; voir Callegari 2020).  +
