The book is Lichfield Cathedral Library, R49A. It is signed on the title page by a later owner ‘E (or possibly F) Hartford’. This might be Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford, of the 3rd creation, (1539–1621), the grandfather of William, 2nd Duke of Somerset (1588–1660), whose wife Frances, Duchess of Somerset, gave his books to the library in 1673: another volume in the same library has one of his bindings. (Burnett 2020b, p. 1360 n. 15) (en)  +
Additional Letter, Giles 1865-6, vol. I.2 pp. 457–8, is the same letter but omits the coin story. Hatch and Vos, p. 229, regarded the Additional Letter as the one which was actually sent and 149 as a draft; and concluded that Ascham changed his mind about sending the coins.

Most authorities (inc. ODNB) give a date of birth in 1598, but Burnett 2020b, p. 1193 gives 1606, citing discussion at a conference in 2019.
(fr)  +
[Mylord Woodstock is here as a triumphant man in good fortune. All his appearances are for the good opinion he has of his beauty. The Chevalier Fontaine who is with him does not make as much case of his own. He is mocked as preferring better to see an old medal than a pretty woman. This is due to the fact that he is thinking more freely and he is witty.] (Trans. F. de Callataӱ.) (fr)  +
