La castrametation décrit précisément les techniques des soldats romains pour élever leurs camps. L'illustration de ce bel ouvrage est entièrement due à Pierre Vase qui dessina la marque de l'imprimeur ainsi que les nombreuses reproductions de médailles, les vues de soldats et camps romains, puis celles des bains dans la seconde partie. Pierre Vase, traduction du patronyme germanique Pierre Eskirch, fut une « figure majeure de la gravure sur bois à Lyon au milieu du XVIe siècle. Né à Paris vers 1518-1520 d'un père allemand, graveur sur métal, Eskirch est mentionné à Lyon à partir de 1548 où il travaille pour l'éditeur Guillaume Rouillé, qui l'emploie pour l'illustration de livres.
