'Nichols read the date as 14 May 1702, and said that the addressee was Archdeacon Battely, but there is no addressee on the letter. As for the date, as Mackenzie says, it ‘is partly mutilated, so that it is impossible to tell the precise year in which it was written’: but 14 October seems certain, and the year is 170x, with 1700 as the most likely reading. Smyth read it as ‘2 October 1700’, but he does not seem reliable. Mackenzie, followed by the BL catalogue, identified the writer as John Finch, but the initial looks like an ‘H’, and the handwriting and idiosyncratic spelling are exactly the same as is found in Heneage Finch’s contemporary letter to William Courten about Athenian coins. From the general approach and content, I would think that Courten was also the intended receipient of this letter. But there is no addressee, and it is hard to imagine Sutherland writing in this way to Sloane, since in July 1702, after Courten’s death, [[James Sutherland - Hans Sloane - 1702-07-07|he wrote to Sloane to introduce himself]]. It ‘fits’ much better with his correspondence with Courten, although we do not seem to have any letter of 28th August, to which Sutherland refers at the beginning of the letter.'
